Last Thursday Swell sponsored the 8th hole at SIMA’s 10th annual Waterman’s
Weekend Golf Tournament at the St. Regis perched over the Salt Creek line-up.
Surfer’s and their sponsors took the links to tee off amid company sponsored
parties at each tee box.

In years past golfers surfed a wave at middles for a score to add on their
card, but this year’s hazards came in the form of models playing beer pong and
tequila cannonballs. Swell fully re-created the cult comedy classic Caddyshack
at one of the more difficult holes of the course. Nobody left our Bushwood
country club without getting tanked by an exploding golf ball, peligroso tequila
suicides or the heckles of our very own crossed-eyed Carl.

As the day progressed the surfing legends teed off our own homegrown Kentucky
Bluegrass featherbed mixed with Northern California sensemilla, and put on a
show of their own. Julian Wilson looked Slater-esk, driving the ball as
naturally as he rips in the water. Timmy Reyes chipped towards an even score
until his buzzed buddy at O’Neil flug a driver at him as he teed off, lopping
his shaft in half.

Julian Driving it towards Creek!

The classic moment of the day came when 3x world champ, Tom Curren shanked it on
his final hole, and when he asked for a mulligan ball Dave at Swell swapped it
with an exploding one. When it popped and covered Tom in white powder everybody
froze, unsure of how the stoic champ would react. He finally cracked a smile,
talked some smack, and went on to receive “Waterman of the Year” honors.
The day was definitely a lighthearted way to get everyone together on the course
and raise money for the SIMA Environmental fund.

So when it comes to a core score we found these three products to score the lowest (possibly in the negatives) on the charts. This is the first Coreshopsdirect.com Poor score awards.
So the award for the top 3 lamest surf products goes to:

1) Garnier Fructis Surf Hair

Surf hair really?? that is pretty embarrassing.. When I think surf hair I think salt water, sunscreen and sand, not fruity smelling designer “Texture Paste”.. If you have to rub something in your hair please don’t call it “surf hair,” call it LA Douche Hair or Frat Boy Look.. But Please for god sake don’t call it surf hair..

2) Perfect Surfer Trainer

Perfect Surf trainer Eh? I stumbled across this one in ESM and nearly died laughing. I really hope these don’t sell… really do we need people learning to pop up before they even have ocean skills? I mean come on.. take some on the head and pay your dues if you really want to learn how to surf, don’t blow a ton of cash on a kook machine. This is really up there on the poor score list.

**it could be yours for only $499.00!!!!! (actual retail price) hahahahaah

3) SUP Skateboard

Ok we get it you like to SUP, but really?? a SUP skateboard?

I admit it.. I’m a closet sweeper. When the surf is small and I want to get out there, I borrow a friends board and paddle away. Something to do when it’s flat.. But why on earth would you need a skateboard to practice sweeping? It’s not like it gets too flat for SUPing ever and if it is too windy hit the skate park or use your indo board… don’t paddle away on the asphalt like a road barney. SUPing is a big enough of a trend out in the water so why do you need to bring that level of lameness to dry land?

so this concludes the awards…

if you see any products that deserve to get posted let us know and we will send you a free Tee..

we apologize in advance to anyone we may have offended… but seriously you guys need a bit of heckling

Style out your pops this year with his favorite Surf Shop tee shirt. Coreshopsdirect.com is the only place you can get almost any shop tee in the USA.

Nobody get more stoked to support the local surfers than the Dads, and for just over 20 bucks you can become his favorite kid this year. This time of year some shops just get over run by tourists, or those mouthy shop grommets fresh out of grade school. Grabbing a Fathers day gift at coreshops lets you pick among 300+ different surf-shop shirts without getting that shopping headache or a parking ticket.

But don’t worry, we take care of the shop too. 50% of your contribution goes back to support your local surf shop crew.

Hurry up though, only 4 days left to dial in your dad, or he’ll be bitter all summer.

Here’s some suggestions for the old man:

Nobody was happier than Rip Curl to hear this frightening news from the NOAA, “2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook calls for an 85% chance of an above normal season.this season could see activity comparable to a number of extremely active seasons since 1995. If the 2010 activity reaches the upper end of our predicted ranges, it will be one of the most active seasons on record.”

This forecast changes the worries of the guys on tour from fickle, to frightening for this years Rip Curl Pro Search, Puerto Rico.

For those of you who don’t know, The west coast of Puerto Rico holds a dense concentration of bowly reefs and serious point breaks. They even have a big-wave spot (tres palmas) that may be the only place to hold the comp if this season’s weather patterns line up they way they anticipate.

Most surf communities cant hold a candle to the local surf culture in Rincon, PR. The mixture of rhino-chasing ex-pats, and hard charging hombres make this the life-long training ground for world champs like CJ and Slater.
“Having an event in Puerto Rico is almost a draw to keep me on Tour all year, because I couldn’t imagine having an event in my backyard and not being able to be there,” said Kelly Slater.

So if you haven’t been to Puerto Rico’s wave rich west coast, or hung out at a WCT event…buy your ticket! They’re usually 1/2 as much as Hawaii (along with everything else in PR).

You’re guaranteed to share a rum&punch with every living legend in the industry if you head down there for this event. Charging Ex-Pat Dennis Rich owns a raging hotel and bar on Pools Beach that shows surf movies around their pool every night where your almost guaranteed to rub elbows with your surfing soulmate, or Dennis will buy you a shot of Jameson.

But there’s always a price to pay for perfect surf, and reggae-ton dance-athons. The local grom squad is known to clean out your car without permission. So, bring a dispoable camera to catch the top 45 try to tackle this year’s Hurricane season during the first ever WCT contest on the East coast/Caribbean.

Dont forget to order the Mofungo!

WCT PR MIGHT GO XXL!

It has happened to all of us…

You are out in the line up and it’s barreling its tits off.. you told yourself beforehand that you could only stay out for an hour, but you have lost track of time and you didn’t bring a watch.

So you start asking around…

“Hey do you know what time it is?”

Your assumption is that the guy next to you with the snazzy new Nixon will hit you back with what you want to hear… but this is where the “time tax” comes into play..

Instead of reading you off the correct time, the “time taxer” adds 15 or 20 minutes to the reading off his watch with the hope that you pack up quick and head home….

and to be honest I have seen it work.

The theory with time taxing is that if someone is asking you for the time then they must have somewhere to go in the near future. So tacking on those extra 15-20 minutes might just make that other guy leave earlier and give you a couple of more waves to your greedy little self..

so the question is “is time taxing wrong?”

Honestly right now I am divided..

I mean yeah it’s selfish, but isn’t surfing kind of a selfish sport to begin with?
And if that person really needed to be somewhere important then why didn’t he wear his own damn watch? Right?

But then again I’ve had instances were those extra few minutes are so crucial to an epic session and by the grace of some geezer in the line up I have been able to maximize my water time..

so it’s open for debate.

Let us know what you think and If we like your comment enough we might just send you a tee shirt hand printed by one of us time taxers..

After writing this though I hope I don’t spread the trend and end up getting time taxed myself… hahah

So here is a simple recipe to make a cheap balance training device using some things you can probably find lying around the house or garage..

All you will need to get you started is:

an empty bottle of cola

an old skate deck

a source of water

simple enough eh?

Now just fill the 2 liter bottle with water, lay the deck across it and voila! you have your very own ghetto indo board….

It is definitely not as safe or durable as the actual thing, but it can be surprisingly fun and easy to make.

so you might be thinking once that bottle is filled with water it will explode under the weight of you and the deck, but you would be surprised. I have seen many hefty blokes try it out and to this date never seen one rupture. Just make sure you switch out bottles every so often and use water inside so that if it does somehow burst you won’t have a huge coca cola stain on your rug.

But as a word of advice
BE VERY CAREFUL!!

THIS IS MUCH MORE DANGEROUS THAN AN INDO BOARD

UNLIKE THE INDO BOARD THE DECK DOESN’T HAVE SAFETY GROOVES ON THE BOTTOM SO IT IS REALLY EASY TO FALL ON YOUR FACE IF YOU ARE NOT CAREFUL..

Many times I’ve have seen a deck go shooting out against the walls and other peoples ankles.. so if you do decide to make one of these USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK and only use it in a room or area than you don’t mind things being broken..

besides that have fun and start pissing off the people on the floor below you…

Cheers!

we are going to make one for the office and post some videos/pictures of us all eating it hard… stay tuned….

until then check out the real thing here http://www.indoboard.com/

This movie got handed my way and I thought it was pretty classic. I wouldn’t call it a surf movie per se, but it definitely highlights the benefits of a surf club in a place like Bangladesh.

One of the characters in this documentary from Jedidiah is pretty core if you ask me. This local Bangladeshi guy named Jafar manages to haggle a board off an Aussie traveler and then he teaches himself how to surf.

So for 10 years Jafar surfs by himself as the lone surfer in Bangladesh with little idea about the sport or the industry. It was not until he saw a surf movie that he figured out how to ride the thing correctly and even still he had no concept of wax or a leash. But when he later meets an American photographer, he realizes he’s been missing many core essential and is thrilled to learn from this foreigner.

The movie gets its name from an email Jafar sends to one of the film’s cast members asking for “Gum” or wax for his “Boat” or board…. kinda shows you how alien surfing is in the Bangladeshi culture.

Anyways this guy is a savage and is changing lives with the surf club and “Surfing the Nations”. Gum for my Boat highlights the intrinsic value of surfing in developing nations, and how it deters misguided youths from a life of street crime.

The Man, The Myth, the Legend

anyways check out the movie.. Jafar is surprisingly good for a Bangladeshi surfer and it looks like there can be some fun little sessions to be had in that part of the Indian ocean.. This movie gets a thumbs up from us.. if not for its message, just for the story of Jafar..

Just when you thought surfing went totally mainstream, Christian Fletcher keeps it core. His announcement of Biggest Wave certainly didn’t please the suits over at ESPN when he pissed on Sebastian Steudtner parade “ And the winner is….the F*ing Nazi who can’t even paddle”

Our Core-shops co-workers said the room went dead, followed by five minutes of awkward whispers. Obviously nobody cheered for the shine Fetcher dealt, but you didn’t hear anyone defend the dick dragging German either.

I mean, they call it the proving grounds for a reason, and that kraut got some harmless heckles for never scratching into his own waves, and leaving some DNA on the reef like the rest of those hell-men.

When it aired on ESPN last Tuesday, no mention of that anti-aryan episode made the final cut, but we’re curious how this will affect the mainstream investment in the industry. If you haven’t noticed, Surfline is littered with ESPN and UFC banners. So will future shows be scripted and censored to protect the endorsement dollars? We hope not.

Since when has a prestigious honor ever been entrusted in the burn-out brain of Christina Fletcher anyways? They used to ban the guy from pro surfing looking and acting like a junkie on tour. But, with progressive surfing bringing in the bacon from corporate sponsors, its turns out he was right all along. He was the future, lets just hope his style of anarchical antics aren’t a thing of the past. Its almost like the event organizers invited this jab for the German. If you disagree, you probably can’t paddle either, or you don’t know Christian Fletcher.

This Christian Fletcher video explains Fletcher’s deconstructive ingenuity.

The contest will pit North vs. South County in a unique tag team format, where each team will be battling for both bragging rights and the other teams’ boards.

Two teams of 10 will be chosen by Ocean Beach Surf and Skate in the South and Quiver Boardworks and Cole Surfboards in the North. They will then run to shore and tag a teammate to go out and do the same; judges will score the best two waves of the three for each surfer and at the end of the day the team with the most points wins. The losing team must give up their surfboards to the winning team, and the winning team will then donate the boards to the Surfrider Foundation.
