Opening Day: Hurricane Season 2010 Could Make the Rip Curl Search PR …XXL

Nobody was happier than Rip Curl to hear this frightening news from the NOAA, “2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook calls for an 85% chance of an above normal season.this season could see activity comparable to a number of extremely active seasons since 1995. If the 2010 activity reaches the upper end of our predicted ranges, it will be one of the most active seasons on record.”

This forecast changes the worries of the guys on tour from fickle, to frightening for this years Rip Curl Pro Search, Puerto Rico.

For those of you who don’t know, The west coast of Puerto Rico holds a dense concentration of bowly reefs and serious point breaks. They even have a big-wave spot (tres palmas) that may be the only place to hold the comp if this season’s weather patterns line up they way they anticipate.

Most surf communities cant hold a candle to the local surf culture in Rincon, PR. The mixture of rhino-chasing ex-pats, and hard charging hombres make this the life-long training ground for world champs like CJ and Slater.
“Having an event in Puerto Rico is almost a draw to keep me on Tour all year, because I couldn’t imagine having an event in my backyard and not being able to be there,” said Kelly Slater.

So if you haven’t been to Puerto Rico’s wave rich west coast, or hung out at a WCT event…buy your ticket! They’re usually 1/2 as much as Hawaii (along with everything else in PR).

You’re guaranteed to share a rum&punch with every living legend in the industry if you head down there for this event. Charging Ex-Pat Dennis Rich owns a raging hotel and bar on Pools Beach that shows surf movies around their pool every night where your almost guaranteed to rub elbows with your surfing soulmate, or Dennis will buy you a shot of Jameson.

But there’s always a price to pay for perfect surf, and reggae-ton dance-athons. The local grom squad is known to clean out your car without permission. So, bring a dispoable camera to catch the top 45 try to tackle this year’s Hurricane season during the first ever WCT contest on the East coast/Caribbean.
