A First Of It's Kind: Girl In The Curl

If you’ve ever wanted to know what it feels like to consistently be first, go talk to Mary Hartmann. As a former top competitor turned surf shop proprietress, Mary was the first in Orange County, CA, to launch a just for girls surf school, the first to launch a just-for-girls surf camp, and the first to open a just-for-girls surf shop. (So now you know who to thank for the area’s stellar-looking lineup!)

Located in Dana Point, CA, Girl In The Curlsurf shop, school and camp opened in 1997 to much gratitude from a community amped to see more female support in the male dominated surf industry. Firmly believing that girls don’t need to turn their backs on femininity to be hard chargers, Mary incorporates lots of “girlie” themes in Curl’s decor and demeanor while at the same time encouraging her students to become fierce wave warriors.

As Curl’s success and fame continues to spread, we’ll be posting regular articles on their upcoming events and promotions. For now, check out their luscious line of boy-beater tanks.
